A well-known spa resort surrounded by trees with glorious fall colors
Offering nine different varieties of thermal water, Noboribetsu Onsen is one of Japan's best hot spring resorts. Places of interest near this spa town include Oyunuma, a hot-spring pond, and Jigokudani (literally "Hell Valley" named for its sulfurous, bubbling waters,) both created by the volcanic activity of Mount Hiyori. The area is also noted for its leaf-peeping opportunities. This is the ideal spot to enjoy the sight of steam rising from the waters against the glorious backdrop of scarlet foliage provided by Japanese varieties of rowan and sumac.
Ailments said to be alleviated by the thermal waters include:
Neuralgia, joint pains, fatigue and other conditions
