The former Hokkaido Government Office Building is an imposing figure. The red brick structure is known affectionately locally as merely “the red brick office building.” Impressively, the building was the home of Hokkaido’s local government for around 80 years, until its current office was built.
The former government building was built in 1888 (Meiji Year 21), in the style of American neo-baroque architecture. The building is currently open to the public, free of charge. Inside, visitors are treated to a wealth of resources about the history and culture of Hokkaido. There are many volunteer staff on site, ready to provide information about the building and the region.
